90 Miler, Adirondack Canoe Classic, Old Forge to Saranac Lake, to be held, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, September 11, 12 & 13.
This race was previously organized by the Adirondack Watershed Alliance, under the excellent direction of Grace and Brian McDonald. This year it was initially to be done by the Adirondack Watershed Alliance and the Northern Forest Canoe Trail, working together but it was decided not to be held because of Covid-19 complications.
Stephen L. Buzzell, a resident of Lake Clear and 2014 Classic first place finisher, in the C-1, amateur men class, has decided that this tradition and all it means to the racers, communities, business and support organizations, is too important to not have the race this year.

Send check, money order, bank check or cash payable to 90 Mile Race and send to the address below. You will receive a receipt. Given the nature of the race this year, no refunds will be given but the race is less complicated. Just do the race and turn in your time.
No Starting by Class and Race Timing
In previous years each class of racers assembled and started at the same time. Because of Covid-19, that is not planned for this year. Times were kept for each day and total times determined each class winners. For this race participants will keep track of their times, for each day, based on the honor system. Times will be turned in on Sunday, as each boat finishes. Each racer can start and finish when desired. For safety, thought should be given to doing it during daylight. In previous years each day had to be completed by a certain cut off time or the boat was disqualified. That is not necessary this year. If there is an awards ceremony, on Sunday, it would be good if all boats were done within a reasonable time, maybe around 3:00 PM.
Volunteers, Support People and Racer Responsibility
Each racer should be prepared to do the race without any aid stations, monitors as to progress and finishing and being rescued. Each racer can have support people (pit crew) for food, watercraft transport and replacing broken equipment. The prior rules apply regarding what pit crew people can and cannot do and what must be carried on the watercraft, such as wheels. Each racer must have a personal floatation device, readily available. Prior rules required it be attached to the boat, but it you fall out and the boat drifts away, you may not have it. Use your own judgment. By entering the race each racer agrees that they are totally responsible for themselves and agree to hold all other people and entities harmless. Volunteers will be encouraged to participate but there are no assurances, that there will be volunteers. In previous years DEC could cancel a day or delay a start, because of weather considerations. This year it will be up to each racer to use their own judgment. In previous years a boat shuttle was available. That may or may not happen this year.
Course Changes
The first day will be the same, starting at the public beach, in Old Forge. Parking is limited so try to get dropped off and have the vehicle leave.
At the start of the second day, on Saturday, on Long Lake, in previous years, private property was used and the race started upstream and came under the bridge, at the Long Lake municipal beach area. This year each racer will start the race at the municipal beach. Because everyone can do the race when they want, it is not anticipated that there will be traffic congestion, at the beach area. It is suggested that racers not leave a vehicle there, so all racers will have easy access.
On Sunday, the third day, previously this started in the Fish Creek Ponds Campsite. This was not ideal because of having to enter the campground, a narrow road, camper activity and congested area where the race started. This year it will start at the DEC boat launch, at Saranac Inn. If coming from Tupper Lake you will go past the Fish Creek Ponds Campground. It has 37 parking spaces, a circular drive launch area, two ramps and two long docks. It is not anticipated that traffic congestion will be a problem and hopefully most racers will be dropped off and the driver will go to the finish, in Saranac Lake. It appears that approximately 2.5 miles will be lost on the second day, because of not starting upstream, from the municipal beach area. It appears that it is approximately 4.2 miles, from Saranac Inn to where Fish Creek enters Upper Saranac Lake. It appears that from the campsite to where Fish Creek enters Upper Saranac Lake, it is approximately 1.8 miles. This results in an extra 2.4 miles, which is offset by the 2.5 miles lost, on the second day.
Race Application
Send applications to the address below. Include:
1. Name of each racer
2. Age of each racer
3. Gender of each racer
4. Mailing address of boat captain
5. Telephone numbers of the captain
6. Email address of the captain
7. Manufacturer of boat
8. Model of boat
9. Length
10. Weight per manufacturer or weigh it
11. Boat material
12. Existing race number, if any.
If you have a race number, from the New York Marathon Canoe Racing Association, now the New York Paddlesports Raciing Association, use it. Other numbers will try to be assigned and racers notified. If no number is assigned, try two letters and one number, for a three-digit designation. Put numbers on each side of the boat, above the water line.
Applications should be postmarked by Thursday, September 10, 2020. If mailing on that day, which is the day before the race or after, call the phone number below, to be added to the racers roster. If it becomes impossible to send the application and fees before the 10th do it as soon as possible, so it is, hopefully, received by Saturday, the second day of the race, so you will be on the roster, on Sunday.
Number of Boats
In previous years the race was limited to 250 boats. That was reasonable given the complexities of the group starts and course timing. Also, certain passages and portages have become crowded, creating possible safety hazards. There will be no cut off on the number of boats, this year. With people starting at random times and not in groups, the racers will, hopefully, be more spread out.
Awards Ceremony, Plaques and Swag
It remains uncertain that there will be a group awards ceremony at the end of the race. The extremes are that there will be an awards ceremony, with social distancing or it could be that race times are turned and racers notified later, of the results. There will plaques or another type of artifact for first, second and third, in each category. It is anticipated that hats, pins and other items will be available for purchase, but not guaranteed. Something will be given to each racer, at no charge.
In previous years there were some special recognitions including the Gold Canoe Club, for longevity in the Adirondack Canoe Classic. Those will be attempted for this race.
Race Within a Race
Some racers may want to enter the race but cannot do all three days, so before, they would not enter. You can enter and race the days you want. There will be a special category for racers who only race part of the race but have a first-place finish, for each day, in this special category.
Possible Future Races
1. This race next year.
2. The Northern Forest Canoe Trail.
3. Saranac Inn boat launch site to Lake Champlain.
4. Whiteface Ski Area, top of Skyward to the base of the gondola.
